Cultural notes from all over

Hey, check out the current offering at Murry's Dinner Playhouse -- "Little Shop of Horrors." Some good voices and local talent in the rock comedy confection about a man-eating plant (a fine prop rented for the production).

Now from our fine arts critic on  last night's National Symphony Orchestra concert at Reynolds Center at UCA.:

Packed crowd, rousing performances of Wagner, Bernstein, Dvorak and Weiner. Gov. Mike Beebe was there. After first encore and continuing standing ovation conductor Ivan Fischer called Beebe up and gave him the baton. Sometimes frenetic, Beebe led the orchestra in a rousing rendition of a Sousa march. Standing ovation. Fischer pushed the guv back to the dais for a couple of acknowledgements. NSO manager told me afterward at a reception at the president's mansion (attended by former resident Winfred Thompson) that it wasn't exactly spontaneous but they had trouble getting Beebe to do it. Once he got into it, he hammed it up pretty well though he wasn't quite as energetic as Fischer.

Thanks to Carrick Patterson for a cell phone shot of Beebe leading "Stars and Stripes Forever."
