The Daily Howler offers the first of what will be several posts analyzing what President Obama has said about education and news media coverage of same. It's long. But he's a careful analyst.
If nothing else, note what he says about Obama's statement on the "relative decline" of American education, based on international rankings. The fact is -- if you accept the standard Obama invoked, which is problematic because of questions about whether all children in all countries are measured and in similar fashion -- is that the U.S. has shown improvement over the long term in the very ranking Obama cited. Not, perhaps, to where we should be, but improvement just the same. Cliches come easy in education reporting. The Howler does a great job of pointing them out.
