Bingo compromise

The Senate will not go along with a total tax exemption and  deregulation of so-called charity bingo. But a committee approved today an amended version of HB 1111 that will cut the tax, currently a penny for each bingo card, by 70 percent, in theory leaving enough to pay for the state's cost of oversight.

The bill, which also repeals an excise tax on bingo equipment, is still bad news. It removes language explicitly authorizing the Department of Finance and Administration to hire people to oversee the racket.
