Wal-Mart blues

Good coverage in the Morning News of the news that Wal-Mart was laying off more than 5 percent of its Bentonville headquarters work force. Sidebars in addition to the main link talk about the impact on workers and the region.

Northwest Arkansas long ago came to the realization that it wasn't immune from the economic and real estate downturn, but Wal-Mart's rising sales had run counter to the generally gloomy national situation. Yesterday's news was the concrete signal, as if it was needed, that no one is truly safe in today's economy. It hurt. One of the great verities of Arkansas existence -- death, taxes and a rising price of Wal-Mart stock -- was proved inaccurate years ago, of course. Wal-Mart today sells for less per share than it did five years ago.
