The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum, otherwise known as Commodore Hays' Navy, drew a record 20,017 visitors in 2008, to add to about 22,000 in its first two years of operation.
The city has spent nearly $3 million on the operation, with ongoing general fund expenses nearing $100,000 a year, according to the last report I saw. Its revenue from tickets and souvenirs may come close to offsetting the operating costs.
February 11, 2009 - North Little Rock, AR) 2008 attendance at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum (AIMM) has again broken a record. 20,017 people visited AIMM in 2008, nearly double the attendance in 2007, and a 66% increase over the previous high mark of 12,032 set in 2006.
A significant factor in the increased attendance was the increased number of school groups visiting the museum in the spring. The number of school groups visiting the museum more than doubled in 2008. In addition, the museum expanded its marketing efforts, creating pages on the popular social networking sites Facebook and My Space as well as more specialized networking websites. A completely revamped and updated website was also launched in 2008.
The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is home to the historic submarine USS Razorback (SS-394). The museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday during the winter and is open five days a week during the summer.
