Artchurch Studios, a school and gallery at 301 Whittington in Hot Springs, is missing a 6-foot-tall gecko.
The fiberglass lizard, called The Watchman, was removed from the exterior wall early Monday morning, Terri Menefee, Artchurch owner, said. Security cameras picked up a picture of a silver van and a couple of trucks in the parking lot.
Menefee said that whoever stole the gecko had to “straddle” copper, bronze and stainless steel sculptures to grab it, which makes it seem unlikely the thieves were after metal they could sell.
Menefee said a private detective has been hired. Artchurch would like to see its gecko returned, but if it isn’t, however, she and husband Marc Menefee, a sculptor, will probably create a website featuring the gecko traveling the world.
