Reps of the Sierra Club and other opponents of the coal-fired power plant in Hempstead County got a meeting with Gov. Mike Beebe this morning, but no specific encouragement on their idea that he could call a temporary halt to coal plant construction while awaiting a potential important change of federal viewpoint on the greenhouse gases produced by coal burning. The Sierra Club said Beebe was well-informed and they hoped he'd consider their views carefully, etc.
Beebe told reporters later that he had no authority to issue a moratorium, though the Sierra Club believes otherwise. Check our video for more.
KUAR has interview with Beebe here. A little uncomfortable, it seems, about the direct question of whether he'd do something.
