Gulpsville UPDATE

E-mail to D-G staffers today reportedly said:

There will be a short meeting in the newsroom today at 3 p.m. Walter Hussman would like to talk to employees.

Please make space for your colleagues from other departments who will come upstairs to join us for this announcement.

Griffin Smith

Updates welcome. Context: Nationwide, the newspaper business has been a bloodbath of layoffs and trims in paper size. The D-G earlier in the year froze hiring and pay and officials said they'd be re-evaluating at the end of the year whether further adjustments would be required in 2009.

UPDATE: The Democrat-Gazette goes against the flow. Report says the staff was told there will be standard Christmas bonuses again this year and that no forseeable layoffs are in the company's future. Multiple staffers characterized it as a pep talk and acknowledgment of good work, particularly against recent layoffs by the newspaper's primary media competitor in Arkansas, the Stephens Media, and a newsprint-saving size reduction of Stephens' Morning News in Springdale. Merry Christmas to all.
