The NY Times had optimistic news today in indications that President Obama will use his executive power to turn back some of the excesses of the imperial Bush presidency -- stem cell research, family planning and mineral exploration are among the potential issues to be addressed.
During the campaign, Obama spoke persuasively of his disagreement with Bush's unprecedented expansion of the executive. Will he soon repudiate the unprecedented Bush practice of ":signing statements"? These are essentially documents saying Bush was not bound by law. He has said he intends to follow a different course. As it happens, the Times Sunday magazine took a long look at the imperial presidency and the outlook for change.
