NLR politics: Too hot for church

Ah, it's reminiscent of the glory days of cussin' mayors, fist-throwing aldermen and other hijinks.

Apparently, the Levy Baptist Church has included itself out of a  planned town hall meeting at the church this week for political candidates on account of the heated nature of the campaign.

The Levy Blog carries this letter to Alderman Cary Gaines about the cancellation from the church's pastor:

Dear Alderman Gaines,

Greetings from the office of Levy Baptist Church! I pray that you are enjoying God’s bountiful blessings on this beautiful autumn day.

Cary, I have been watching closely the volatility of the current political climate in North Little Rock and am concerned about the Town Hall Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 23rd. We had planned, in this meeting, to have candidates present to answer questions. While initially, I fully supported and wanted such a meeting, I must now ask that we not have a meeting in the church prior to the upcoming election.

The church, of course, is a house of prayer for all people. It is a place of peace. While Town Hall Meetings are wonderful at the church, a place for the community to gather and dialogue about improvements of our city, the political nature of this meeting stands the chance of “getting out of hand.”

I do hope that you’ll understand my firm commitment remains to help North Little Rock in every way that I can. I pray for our city and long for its good. If acceptable to you, I’d welcome a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, January 6, at 6:30 p.m.

Blessings to you,
Rev. Steven G. Tiner
Senior Pastor
Levy Baptist Church

Bubba Lloyd's TV ads about the millions Mayor Pat Hays has spent on his rusty mothball fleet apparently have stoked the political temp to boiling in D'town.

A message for the mayor:  Though we did endorse your re-election today and won't take it back, we'd observe that invoking war dead as defense of your riverfront spending is the last and flimsy refuge of a scoundrel. Are you saying every city in the country without a rustbucket tub or tug is anti-American? Don't go Sarah Palin on us, please.
