It's not your imagination. A lot of the water in Little Rock looks dirty. Central Arkansas Water operators say this is manganese, somehow stirred up in the lines by the heavy rains. ???
It's a "natural element," we're assured, safe to drink, cook and bathe in. Oh, but don't wash any light colored clothing in this stuff. It might stain. I'm still searching for a somewhat more technical explanation of what shook this stuff loose.
UPDATE: A CAW news release says that the problem is an increased level of manganese in the upper levels of the Lake Maumelle water supply. The element is normally at the lake's bottom, but heavy rain, high wind and cooler temperatures suspended more of the stuff in the upper levels of the water. It's always present in water, but generally at invisible levels. The water utility says the problem should clear up in 24 to 36 hours.
