You read it here first, in June 2007: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has acquired the 1887 painting "The Indian and the Lily" by George deForest Brush. We predicted it; Crystal Bridges confirmed it today in a press release.
The painting was in the collection of the Pierre Hotel and was purchased for $4.8 million at a Sotheby's auction Dec. 1, 2004. The auction catalog described the painting as one of the artist's most renowned works. It seemed like a perfect fit for Alice Walton's museum, which will focus on American works from the 19th and early 20th century.
The painting will be on exhibit at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., Sept. 24 through Jan. 4.
