Idle thoughts:

I know solid Republicans who believe Sarah Palin isn't qualified to be vice president and who say they never expected her choice by John McCain to survive.

But ... they also say they didn't anticipate the reflexive and enthusiastic support she'd receive from the Religious Right base, an important element of the Republican GOTV effort.

So I'm cogitating. Fuller vetting of Palin has already begun to uncover a trove of problems with her candidacy -- none of them being her pregnant daughter (except for what her decision to run says about the Alaska governor's insensitivity to thrusting a daughter into an international spotlight). Check this blog for Alaska-based insight into her doings.

So what if McCain admits another mistaken hasty judgment and Palin withdraws? (Of course they'll blame it on the evil Democratic liberals and say it's in the interest of the family, etc.) Who, then, would be the vice presidential pick?

Party regulars have already shouted down McCain's first choice, Sen. Joe Lieberman. The very Religious Right that has cheered Palin's appointment would go nuclear if she were to withdraw in favor of Mitt Romney, also suspect on pet social issues.

You know where this is going don't you? Could Mike Huckabee emerge on the national ticket after all?

Speculation for a rainy day. Should a McCain vetter come calling in Little Rock, let me know.

RELATED TOPIC: Whatever happens, it seems likely that McCain moves won't be getting the same sort of friendly media attention he once received. Nor will he be chumming around with press pals.
