CNN says McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate. Is he looking for Hillary votes?

Whoever wins the presidency in November,  however, the result will be historic.

UPDATE: We're thinking. McCain is 71. He's picked as the person who would succeed him someone whose bona fides are two years in the governor's office in Alaska, period. Can he argue she'd be an able president if he were to croak?

By the way, Palin is solidly anti-abortion, as seen in this story about the birth of her son Trig, who has Down Syndrome. Should go a long way toward buying McCain some much needed credibility with the far right.  (But it won't do much about the shriveling number of supposedly disaffected female Clinton voters. That group is solidly pro-choice.)

Bonus: Palin named her son Trig Paxson Van Palin -- "Paxson" after a popular snowmobiling area in Alaska, and "Van" (and we are in no way making this up) because it makes his name sound like "Van Halen," one of her favorite bands from the 1980s.

UPDATE II: Palin's got skeletons. Back in July, the Alaska state senate approved the hiring of a special prosecutor to look into allegations that Palin tried to use her influence to get her former brother-in-law fired from his job as an State Trooper.

UPDATE III: Daily Kos. while not the most unbiased source in the world, makes some solid points while calling Palin a worse VP pick than Dan Quayle. Namely that -- given her state's low population density and lack of much in the way of agriculture -- she doesn't even bring the two things governors traditionally lend to a presidential ticket: agri experience and urban affairs know how.
