A flame retardant used for decades in everything from furniture to computers, the chemical has been the subject of nationwide concern in recent years, given that it has a tendency to migrate into the bloodstream, turning up in both humans and fish. PBDE can be passed to children through breast milk
, and laboratory tests have linked it to cancer and other ailments.
