Gwatney goes negative

I was sent a mailer by Democratic Party Chair Bill Gwatney today. It's raising money for Joe White of Conway, the Senate candidate against incumbent Republican Gilbert Baker.

It hits Baker hard for the Republican PAC, when Baker was GOP chair, that went heavy negative against Gov. Mike Beebe in the 2006 election and was generally spectacularly unsuccessful at achieving electoral gains for the GOP. Dems haven't forgotten all the same. Had the PAC been successful, Gwatney writes, the people of Arkansas wouldn't be enjoying the cut in the grocery tax that Beebe brought them.

Well. Repubs note that THEIR candidate campaigned on ending the grocery tax, too. As did Gilbert Baker as a Senate candidate in 2000. He also voted for the reduction that Beebe offered. "This is a little hypocritical," one of the Republicans comments to me.

Also politics. Hardball style.
