NLR: The public's ballclub

Dogtown Wire is at it again. Pointing out more favors for the favored over in Boss Hays' North Little Rock.

The nut graf: Since the Arkansas Travelers are leasing public property (the ballpark) to operate a private enterprise, some have argued, they should be paying the property tax like the rest of private parties in Pulaski County. There's court precedent on the side of this argument. This could mean hundreds of thousands in new revenue for city schools, and lesser amounts for Children's Hospital, police and fire pension funds, the city and county.

The city is arguing that the baseball team is essentially a public enterprise and that taxpayers' contribution to building the stadium is proof of that. The city claims no right to property taxes. That means, I guess, that Bill Valentine would happily open up all his records to his public enterprise.
