It's a biggie: the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down Washington D.C.'s ban on handgun ownership. The decision was 5-4. Scalia's majority opinion did note that the ruling does not disturb any number of measures that place limits on weapons. Kennedy joined the Fearsome Foursome of the Right Wing to form the majority.
Please note: handguns still must be registered in D.C., which was probably a more sensible approach all along.
Yes, the presidential candidates are going at it, with McCain casting Obama as a flip-flopper again.
Closer to home, Hopalong McDaniel demagogues.
On the jump, Republican Party stands up for bitter people who cling to guns.
ARKANSAS GOP NEWS RELEASE
Little Rock (June 26, 3008) - “Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a victory for Arkansans and for all Americans who value their Second Amendment rights. It gives us peace of mind to know that our nation’s judicial system upheld our Constitution, instead of bowing to the destructive liberal interpretations of the law of the land.
“This ruling is also an important reminder for voters regarding what is truly at stake in November. Unlike Barack Obama – who is arguably the most anti-gun presidential candidate in our nation’s history – John McCain is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment. Contrary to Obama’s assertion that the D.C. gun ban was “constitutional,” John McCain recognizes that gun ownership is a fundamental right of all Americans, and he will fight to uphold our rights as President.
“Today Arkansans can be at ease and know that no one can infringe on our intrinsic rights. The choice is clear in November: John McCain, who is committed to appointing judges who will continue to defend our constitutional rights, or Barack Obama, whose elitist opinions that we ‘cling to guns’ out of bitterness are completely out of touch with voters in this state.”
