Financing the ballot initiatives

The Bailey family -- Little Rock real estate investors -- continue to account for most of the financial support of the drive to put a state lottery on the ballot this fall. It seems likely to reach voters. And likely to be approved.

Groups pushing initiatives to make adoption and foster parenting more difficult as a way to keep gay people out of parenting and to put further roadblocks on services for unauthorized immigrants have raised far less money. A pittance in the case of the anti-immigrant group. But both these groups have strong grassroots followings. Right-wing churches and crazed xenophobes, respectively, may get the job done on those campaigns without much money.
