Richard Mellon Scaife indicated in a signed column weeks ago that his Pittsburgh newspaper might endorse Hillary Clinton. Now the underwriter of the get-Clinton Arkansas Project has gone and done it.
A reader asks that I comment. He suggests some theories: 1) Scaife thinks Clinton will be easier for McCain to beat; 2) his mental illness is progressing; 3) other ulterior motives.
Beats me. But it might be as simple as the fact that Bill and Hillary Clinton swallowed bile, pride and, arguably, self-respect to schmooze their tormentor. I can think of a couple of famous episodes in Arkansas journalism history, one involving Hillary Clinton, in which a newspaper antagonist was neutralized by a little soft soap.
