Beebe rips feds



We confess. We haven't listened to the governor's weekly radio address since Homer Bailey was governor. Well, maybe we exaggerate a little.

But Roby Brock still listens for Talk Business. And hears a scrap of news. In his latest, Gov. Beebe says a federal cut in workforce development money will be a "staggering blow" to the state's economic development. An uncharitable sort might crack that this apparently means there'll be less corporate welfare to pass out to low-wage, low-tech manufacturers and call centers, but we'll resist the temptation. 

UPDATE: People better informed than I say I have ignorantly convoluted legitimate education funds for needy workers with the corporate welfare assistance. I apologize. Workforce training is a fine thing. Jobs are fine things. Chasing marginal industry with handouts, I still submit, is a subject worthy of debate. Call centers, cut-and-sew plants, shoe factories, etc., come and go based on market forces that have little to do with state payola. We should be careful with its use.
