This is mostly for newspaper junkies. But the creator of an unsanctioned blog on the doings of the Gannett media company stepped out of the shadows today and identified himself.
He's Jim Hopkins, who recently took a buyout from USA Today. Some Little Rock people will remember him as the business editor of the Arkansas Gazette in its final days. He'd come to Little Rock from the Pine Bluff Commercial. He was smart, energetic, organized, adept at writing, editing and design and a nice guy.
I wish we'd been on the web then so I could link you to an affecting story he wrote for the Arkansas Times many years ago about the death of his partner, Danny Bryant, who had been diagnosed with AIDS. Danny died in Boise, Idaho, where Jim went to work after the Gazette closed. He later joined USA Today. The website tells Jim's story, about the rise and fall of Gannett fortunes in a changing newspaper industry and about his time at the Gazette.
