Something smells -- and it isn't enchiladas -- about the recent immigration raid on operators of a chain of Mexican restaurants in Northwest Arkansas. Conspiracy charges? A stretch. It's good to see a group form to speak up against the secretive police state tactics afoot in the region. Local cops were supposed to use their powers to go after real criminals, not make SWAT team raids against people whose bookkeeping doesn't pass muster.

WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT: Here's a Washington Post editorial on the self-defeating state "crackdowns" on immigrants. Immigrants are worth far more to a local economy than they cost. Which hasn't stopped passage of punitive laws in Arizona and elsewhere.
