Greetings from Chicago, where I enjoyed this salad at brunch at Rick Bayless’ Frontera Grill, as good a Mexican restaurant as you’re likely to encounter. The salad is composed of slices of jicama, cucumber and pineapple and dusted with fiery chili powder and other ground spices. Check the Eat Arkansas blog for a shot of my main dish, if the subject interests you.
We saw “Jersey Boys,” the story of the Four Seasons, and it was a rip-roaring hit with the big crowd. We also saw, unbelievably, the first official day of Christmas shopping at what once was Marshall Field, but is now Macy’s. They turned the giant Christmas tree on today and the line for photos in front of it (we didn’t participate) was 90 minutes or more. It’s at least two weeks too early for “Little Drummer Boy” for my taste. Pizza is on the card tonight, I’m pretty sure.
The e-mail has piled up since 4:30 a.m. this morning, but not much big news.
Norman Mailer died. There’s an Arkie angle, of course, his wife Norris Church Mailer …. I see the Hogs were thrashed in Tennessee. Will all the assistant coaches with long-term contracts get big payoffs when Houston departs at the end of the year? …
I’ll check back tomorrow, most likely. Have fun tonight.
