Church and state

When a pastor, in church, introduces a presidential candidate (Mike Huckabee) by saying he believes God is lifting up that candidate, does that cross the line of what is acceptable in churches where contributions are tax deductible? Or how about when another pastor says, in church, that God apparently has chosen an Arkansan among them to rule over the U.S.?

Copy, paste, read and you decide.

Also, here's the Dallas Morning News coverage of the Huckabee revival tour.

It occurs to me, though, that raising a fuss about this, as Americans United for Separation of Church and State seems likely to do, would be a trip to the friendly briar patch for someone looking to stir the evangelical base.

Again, pastors are free individually to support political candidates. They are free, as one quoted in this story is doing, to work independently of their churches to raise money for a candidate. The issue is how the church itself is used, whether in services, publications or other forms.
