Death in Our Town

Richard Allin, who built a legion of  admirers for his years as the Our Town columnist for the Arkansas Gazette and then the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, died today.

He'd been in ill health in recent weeks.

Ruebel Funeral Home will be handling arrangements.

If the subject was the perfect oyster loaf, tripe, railroads, Little Rock's traffic lights, Sewanee (he'd once served as a trustee of his alma mater), the glories of travel or ribald jokes, Richard Allin was the man for all those seasons. The mythical towns of Wad and Gudge will be in mourning.

When the Democrat-Gazette retired Richard and Arkansas Traveler columnist Charles Allbright in 2004, we polled our readers on favorite D-G columnists. The forced retirees were at the top of the heap -- Richard at the very top by a nose -- in a huge turnout of ballots.
