Jet-lagged, I crashed early last night and thus missed an on-the-scene report from Pine Bluff on the failure of the ordinance to criminalize displays of underwear, the so-called saggy pants ordinance:
The ordinance was heard by the public safety committee before the city council meeting. Then at the city council meeting which followed, it was announced that the sponsor of the ordinance withdrew it from consideration. He said he was withdrawing it because of lack of support on the council and with the Mayor. There were 8 people lined up to speak on the ordinance, but that was all mooted. The mayor gave a very thorough and thoughtful speech about why he did not support the ordinance. City officials asked for public participation, financial and other support for positive measures planned for youth.
