A followup to yesterday's exciting thread on contributions to candidates in the Zone 2 LR School Board race.
A caller says a $1,000 contributor to incumbent board member, Micheal Daugherty -- Maurice Watson of Macon, Ga. -- is brother of Linda Watson, the interim school superintendent, recently hired at a salary equivalent to $198,000 a year with Daugherty's support. We haven't been able to confirm that relationship, but we're working on it. If true, I don't think there's any legal prohibition, but .... UPDATE: The contributor is the superintdendent's brother, I've confirmed. He's a successful preacher and former pastor of St. Mark's Baptist Church in Little Rock.
Another caller notes that itemized contributors to challenger Anna Swaim include at least three current and several former board members of the Little Rock Public Education Foundation, which has received direct financial subsidies from the Little Rock School Board; which has met in illegal secret meetings with School Board members; which refused to release public documents until a lawsuit forced them, and which currently operates programs in cooperation with the school district that require school board approval. It also was the conduit through which newspaper publisher Walter Hussman laundered his initial grant in support of merit pay in the school district so that the source would be kept secret.
