Testing, testing

The state Education Department puts a happy face on new figures on Advanced Placement and SAT testing in Arkansas. More students are taking AP tests and more are scoring 3 or higher on the 5-point scale, the level considered proficient in what is supposed to be college-level courses.

Not to be a spoilsport, but -- the percentage scoring three or higher is still only 29.9 percent of the tests taken and that's only about 1 percent better than the previous year. There was a small dip in the number of black students taking the test.

As for the SAT, our scores continue to be better than the national average, but this is largely meaningless. A small number of students take the test compared with the ACT. It's mostly taken by better students considering applications to competitive colleges around the country that require SAT scores on applications.
