LRPD says Ghazi Hammad, 38, was killed and his wife, Khadijah Awwad, 27, was wounded killed in an attempted robbery Tuesday night of a Sardis Road grocery. The report said the couple was closing Tom and Jean’s Grocery at 13622 Sardis (near Shannon Hills) about 10 p.m. when two young men who did business at the store asked to buy something. When they were let in, they pulled guns and ordered Hammad to open the safe. He said he didn’t have a key. The robbers opened fire, killing Hammad, and fled. One shot struck Awwad in the hip, but it wasn’t a serious injury. No arrests as of mid-afternoon, police said, though the teen customers were known at the store.
