NW Ark. U.

Robert Shields, who free-lances a sports column to newspapers around the state, has written a column this week on the great announcer selection. He sees it as more evidence of the growing Northwest Arkansas identity, if not to say chauvinism, that attaches to UAF, otherwise known as the University of Arkansas.

Agree or disagree, Shields is not alone in this feeling. Some high-profile people in Central Arkansas share the view. I understand UA fund-raisers have had stark encounters with the sentiment when they came calling for contributions to the university fund drive. One Little Rock zillionaire, importuned for a significant contribution by a NW Ark. zillionaire, said, "Sure, John. If you match it with a contribution to UALR." Look on the face of the fellow with his hand out? Priceless.
