Media Matters has compiled a huge report drawing on a large body of respectable research data on American opinion. Conservative America is a myth, despite what you hear from Republicans and their media echo chamber and the politicians they have spooked.
On everything from tax policy to social issues, you'll find surprises. A solid majority don't want Roe v. Wade overturned, for example. 89 percent say gay people should have equal job rights. Opinion is in a virtual dead heat -- 46-48 -- on gay adoption, but the clear trend over time in the direction of approval. There's broad support for stricter gun laws, including a permit system. Given a choice between the death penalty and life in prison with no possibility of parole, the people are about evenly split. Only 9 percent favor building fences to curb illegal immigration. A vast majority want the government to provide universal health care. Etc. Cheer or jeer as you wish.
