So the question: Are you for or against the proposal that the Little Rock Board put on the ballot Aug. 14 to increase the mayor's powers?
It would give Mayor Mark Stodola 1) a huge pay raise 2) veto power 3) control of the city manager and city attorney 4) commission appointment power.
I'll need persuading. It's a hybrid in use no place else. I still don't know what's wrong with a mayor-council form of government and why LR should take only a half-step in that direction and a potentially confusing one. Mayor-council works well in North Little Rock and elsewhere. It would be more democratic because it would remove the ruling troika of at-large directors. It would indeed create a strong mayor. But that won't be on the ballot. Too bad.
