We imagined we could hear certain people all over Arkansas sighing around the noon hour today when J.J. Lacey toasted civil rights lawyer John Walker at his 70th birthday party with a wish that he enjoy 70 more. (His birthday is Monday.)
A big crowd -- friends, clients (former state Sen. Bill Walker among them), family, his third-grade teacher from Hope, Little Rock school teachers and School Board President Katherine Mitchell were among those on hand -- gathered at Walker's law office for a huge potluck. I'm going to deal with that on the Eat Arkansas blog.
If business was discussed, I didn't hear it, though I picked up a tip or two that may bear some fruit before long. Many toasts were offered to Attorney Walker for his legal work and commitment to the community. Mitchell toasted a renewed relationship with Walker, who, he acknowledged with a laugh, twice worked to defeat her in past School Board elections. They are family now.
