The Fayetteville shale gas play may be a bonanza for gas producers and some royalty owners may like it, but the state will reap virtually no tax benefit, unlike other states with realistic severance taxes. And environmental issues remain to be seen. Such as this notice, from a lawyer with an interest in environmental matters:
"Chesapeake Operating, Inc, [the company that tried to pass legislation in the last session limiting lawsuits over environmental damage from gas drilling] has recently submitted an application to the Corps of Engineers to divert water from the Little Red River for its oil drilling interests. I strongly encourage you to get involved by writing an email to Mrs. Elaine Edwards [LR District Corps of Engineers, PO Box 867, Little Rock 72203-0867 or firstname.lastname@example.org] addressing your personal thoughts and concerns. This matter has been brought to my attention by our local chapter of Trout Unlimited, #722."
