Jermain Taylor: champ or chump

Jim Harris, formerly of the Times and now writing about sports at Arkansas Business, was at the Jermain Taylor title defense in Memphis and he doesn't have much good to say about the Arkansas boxer, winner in a split decision over Cory Spinks.

Taylor seemed enthusiastic in Memphis only twice: the first coming in the Friday weigh-in when undercard fighter Edison Miranda's bulb dimmed and he forgot who he was fighting, verbally laying into Taylor and leading the champ to respond in kind. Taylor's second energetic outburst came after his Saturday win, which pushed his record to 27-0-1. He told the bored-to-bewilderment Larry Merchant of HBO that he'd gladly take on Iowan Kelly Pavlik, who in the earlier TV fight had unleashed a seven-round fury on Miranda, for his next matchup, but then qualified it by adding something about fighting the best as long as the money was right. Merchant turned away from the interview with a sarcastic "Thank you, Jermain Taylor."

With fights like Saturday's, it's a wonder anyone would put up any money of substance for a Taylor bout now.
