It being a slow day, I reached into a friend's compilation of significant events in Arkansas history. On this day:
In 1923: The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the expulsion of Clay County high school student Pearl Puglsey who powdered her face in violation of a rule against "the use of face paint or cosmetics.
No problem on face-painting today.
In 2001: The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies acquired papers and honored members of the Panel of American Women, organized in 1963 by Sara Murphy, to help change Arkansas attitudes on race, cultures and religions.
Sara and many of her colleagues are gone. Where are their successors in the Little Rock School District today?
PS -- A reader informs me also that J. William Fulbright was born this day in 1905.
