Justices prevail

Five of the seven Supreme Court justices turned out at the Joint Budget Personnel Subcommittee this morning to take questions on the court's budget request. This was the third try today and the budget ultimately was approved as requested, with no cuts. You'll recall that Rep. Jim Medley opened the negotiating last week when Chief Justice Jim Hannah appeared by proposing to cut up to 17 job slots.

Things were more cordial today, but legislators got in a few licks, we hear, about receiving court mandates close to legislative sessions. To which Hannah essentially replied that the court gets them when it gets them. There was some further discussion, too, about leave time and justices offered explanations.
