What do you think about this Stephens Media report? Jack Critcher proposes the state spend $9 million to pay the cost of courses for people who want to work in trucking. It’s sold as a job engine that will make Arkansas a haven for folks seeking decent-paying driving jobs and others in logistics, etc.
My reaction isn’t so positive. It’s a slippery slope, for one thing. You can name plenty of fields with jobs that pay $50,000. Should we pay education costs for all of them? Free teacher tuition comes to mind.

ALSO: We already subsidize this industry enormously with breaks on taxes and, most of all, the auto users subsidy of rebuilding the interstates they destroy.
