No need to wait for a paper when Rep. Steve Harrelson is live blogging from the House floor, as on the debate and 68-27 vote by which the House rolled back increased physical activity requirements for our out-of-shape school kids.
I've always been sympathetic to the notion of increasing required physical activity in school. It could be a good place to build lifelong habits. But it's clear many schools have been doing everything they can to evade meaningful implementation of the law. It's also true in upper grades that there often aren't enough hours in the day for all the classes kids want to take.
How did we manage to have daily P.E. for 12 years when I was in school back in the dark ages of the 50s and 60s? It could have been more useful many of those years, but I don't think, overall, it was a bad thing.
