Arkansas state Rep. Michael Lamoreaux has introduced a resolution (HR1004) to require an "open and public" vote for speaker of the state House of Representatives.
The legislation specifically calls for a "open and public ballot." If the resolution is adopted, "the Speaker shall announce the name and number of votes received by the candidate who received at least a majority of the votes of the membership of the House. Each candidate shall be entitled to verify the number of votes he or she received."
Lamoreaux also filed a companion resolution (HR1005) to change when the speaker's election is held to "no later than seven (7) days after the date of sine die adjournment." Currently, the election takes place on the second Monday in January of even-numbered years (which is typically one year before the regular biennial legislative session begins).
