The National Education Association has issued a preliminary response to the University of Arkansas report that expressed optimism about the early results of a merit pay experiment in Little Rock public schools.
The NEA noted, as we have earlier, the questionable appearance of using a university funded by Walton Foundation money to report on a project advocated and financed by the Walton Foundation. The NEA also said some data is lacking for a full evaluatioin of the UA report. It says, too, as we had noted earlier, that the University news release (and subsequent editorial support in the Democrat-Gazette and Wall Street Journal) makes far more conclusive statements about the success of merit pay than the researchers themselves, who were more cautious.
We've posted the full text of the NEA response here.
