Meet Mosi

Thanks to zookeeper Daphne Brock for the photo of the Little Rock Zoo's baby gorilla, who has now officially been named Mosi, Swahili for first born.

News release on jump.

The Little Rock Zoo is proud to announce that its baby gorilla has a name.
"Mosi," meaning "first born" in the Swahili language, has been selected for the baby.
The name was selected through a public naming competition held by the Zoo.  A committee consisting of Zoo great ape animal staff and an independent member of the community sifted through more than 100 entries before deciding that Mosi was the favored name.  Three separate individuals submitted the winning name.
Winners of the naming competition for submitting the name "Mosi" are:  Debra Wilson of Hot Springs, Jacob and Emily Getzoff of Little Rock, and Jessica Fern of Florence, Alabama.  Winners of the competition were awarded a free membership to the Zoo for 2007.
Sekani, mother of Mosi, is a 15-year-old western lowland gorilla acquired by the Little Rock Zoo from the Toronto Zoo in 2004.  Mosi's father, Fossey, is a 20-year-old gorilla acquired by the Zoo in 1993 from the Columbus Zoo.  The pair was recommended for breeding by the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a captive breeding and conservation program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
