Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who in 1994 wrote a conciliatory letter to Republican gay activists, is now getting hammered on that letter both for being soft on gays and for being hypocritical in his current flogging of the gay marriage issue, NY Times reports. The article says this helps other GOP conservatives, namely Sam Brownback and Gov. Mike Huckabee.
We perhaps should remind readers here of Huckabee's statement in support of civil unions (a flipflop from earlier statements) in an interview (on tape we later learned) with a newspaper in more gay-tolerant New Hampshire. My column after reviewing the transcript.
