Government-financed religion

A big feature in the NY Times Sunday on the proliferation of government-financed programs where religion is a part of the program. The lead is on the Iowa prison program that is also being used in Arkansas. There are differences from place to place. In Arkansas, we don't pay the provider of the mandatory religious instruction for people who opt out of normal prison treatment. But we are, of course, paying for housing of the prisoners. If those who choose the religious program get a better shake, it becomes an issue. The Times article offers some people who criticize the programs as well. This stuff has exploded under Bush. And it's just about impossible to count in one central place the millions being funneled to churches and other groups, for everything from assistance to welfare mothers, to prisoners, etc.
