If you're Gov. Mike Huckabee, an out-of-state media appearance just isn't complete without a bad attempt at humor that ends up offending someone.
In May, he joked with the Washington press corps that he would raise money for his presidential campaign by robbing convenience stores.
Jewish Democrats slammed Arkansas’ governor for joking that he lost weight at a concentration camp.
Mike Huckabee bantered on Thursday with radio talk show host Don Imus about his weight loss; Huckabee, a Republican, has advertised his diet as a health model for obese Americans. Imus chided Huckabee that he looked "emaciated."
"I have just come from six weeks at a concentration camp held by the Democrat party of Arkansas in an undisclosed location, making a hostage tape," Hucakbee replied. "That´s why I look that way."
The National Jewish Democratic Council said Huckabee, a likely contender for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, "ought to think about the people who he might offend with such insensitive words. At the very least, he owes all of us an apology and explanation for his tasteless comments."
UPDATE: The Associated Press follows up, and gets a response from Huckabee:
Huckabee on Friday said the comment was not meant as a slight against Jews or a reference to the Holocaust.
"Having been a nine-time visitor to Israel and taken groups to Yad Vashem (Israel's Holocaust memorial), I have a great deal of respect for the Jewish people," Huckabee said through spokeswoman Alice Stewart. "I never identified a particular kind of camp and to make such a far-reaching statement is laughable and is the type of allegation that makes people cynical."
Of course! Why can't everyone just laugh at his joke about how he got emaciated at a concentration camp? It's hilarious!
