On the payroll

Woody Anderson, the Democratic candidate for Third District Congress, is drawing a salary from his campaign fund, new reports show. This is unusual, but legal, the article notes. I happen to think it's a bad practice, too ripe for abuse, even if it's viewed as a way to even the playing field for challengers. Rep. John Boozman, after all, suffers no loss of taxpayer money while he campaigns. Still, it amounts to a transfer of funds from contributors directly to a candidate's pocket.

Candidates have worked this angle for years, one way or the other. One of Mike Huckabee's early maneuvers was paying his own communications company for his advice during his first race, for Senate against Dale Bumpers.
