Just got an e-mail announcing the "grand opening" Monday of Midtowne Little Rock, the new "lifestyle" shopping center across University Avenue from Park Plaza. This means the arrival in Arkansas, at last, of Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn, the former more interesting to me. I've been a W-S shopper since I bought a newfangled hibachi grill in an outlet in California during my grad school days in 1972. More important than a good cooking supply store is the beneficial effect of infill projects -- whether new construction or redevelopment -- in the center city. It's a positive counter-balance to sprawl.
Now if federal Judge George Howard would just stop dithering and rule in the University Mall case. It's time to let the land owners reclaim that disastrously managed property from Simon Property Group. Then some more redevelopment could occur.
