Bill Walker doesn't intend to let fellow Little Rock mayoral candidate Jesse Mason get ahead of him on the crime issue. News release on the jump.

BILL WALKER NEWS RELEASE

On Thursday, September 21, 2006, a number of local pastors, representing 50,000 or more Little Rock citizens will meet at Kitchen Express Restaurant to endorse former State Senator Bill Walker, candidate for Little Rock City mayor and will address the number one issue in this race, community safety and the city’s rising crime rate.

This meeting is an opportunity for religious leaders to seek out crime-fighting approaches, address the city’s crime statistics, and focus on effective programs that emphasize prevention.

A report released on Wednesday, by the FBI, indicates violent crime in Arkansas increased by more than three times the national average. Little Rock has surpassed the number of homicides committed during 2005.  This week, the city recorded its 48th homicide so far this year. At the end of last year the city had 41 [Fox16 News, 9/20].

The local pastors will speak to the impact that crime has on the city and will discuss plans to work with the next mayor and law enforcement officials to make sure crime does not continue to flourish in the future.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at noon at Kitchen Express Restaurant, located at 4600 Asher Avenue.  The press conference will take place at 1:00 pm.
