The IRS is vowing to crack down
on political activities by religious organizations. Does prohibited activity include James Dobson's Focus on the Family-backed voter guides, often distributed through churches? They think not. I think, under existing law, they are probably right. Direct advocacy of candidates is the issue that can cost a charity its tax-free status, not the providing of material tailored to the interests of a particular congregation or interest group. The Family Council in Arkansas, whose voter guide activites have been mentioned here, is related to the Dobson group. The good news might be that some liberal organizations are fighting back.
